Till Networks
Where more than one till point is required within a business, the tills are usually networked. Till point 1 is normally designated as the "master" till. The master till holds the data which is central to a system such as table balances, and other tills on the network (usually called "satellites") are able to access them. Networking the tills also allows for reports to be run from one location for the whole business, and for programming to be done centrally.
Back Office Software
With back office software connected to your tills, it is possible to collect sales data every day and store it to allow historical sales reports. Software usually provides tools for programming the tills and also for maintaining stock levels within the business by entering deliveries which are matched against sales. In most cases the back office software can be installed at a remote location and connect to the tills using a modem or broadband connection.
Barcodes
For most Retail businesses, a preset till or even a touch screen does not have enough buttons to handle the large volume and variety of items sold. Most products however have barcodes that can be programmed into the till system and then read by a scanner at the point of sale. For products that come from suppliers without barcodes or items that are made in-house, you can use Back office software to create your own in-house bar codes. These can be printed onto labels and then downloaded to the tills.
